How Lockdown Can Be A Template for Life

Since the unexpected arrival of Covid 19 into our lives in early 2020 so much has changed. We are living in a world that feels uncertain, isolated and scary. We are learning so much about the virus and how it works, but what about if we use this time to learn about ourselves?

With each Lockdown we have found that we are being asked to live a much simpler life, things have been stripped back, non essential shops are closed, hospitality is closed and we cannot have much face to face contact with friends and family. During this time of strip back, there maybe things you have hated about Lockdown, but there may also be parts of life that you don't miss at all - I believe this is the perfect time for evaluating what you would love your life to look like moving forward, particularly as we edge slowly closer to normality.

If you are reading this and wondering how Lockdown can be a template for life, ask yourself these simple questions and write down your answers;

1) What have I enjoyed about Lockdown? Dig deep for this one, be honest with yourself, maybe you have enjoyed the slower pace of life, maybe you have enjoyed having more time to do hobbies, perhaps you have reveled in not having to be anywhere at the weekend or maybe you have loved being able to cook from scratch more. It could be that you have even overhauled your work life balance or started a new business.

2) What have I missed during Lockdown? Really think about what you are missing right now, this will give you clues about how you might want to spend your time and with who, once life returns to normal. Maybe you have missed travel, or are dying to eat out, maybe you are craving visiting the cinema or catching up with friends and family. Perhaps self care is important to you and you are missing treatments such as massage, acupuncture and counselling.

3) Who makes me feel good? When you are considering who you miss in your life, have a think about how you feel when you are with them. Do you feel warm and uplifted as you spend time together? Or do you go home feeling drained and flat? This is a good indicator of the best people to gravitate towards when we can eventually socialise again. Stick to the people that feel warm like sunshine to you.

4) What has been essential to me during Lockdown? Perhaps you have found new ways to do things during Lockdown, maybe you no longer send cards to everyone on your friends list and have enjoyed sending a message instead, perhaps you no longer feel the need to purchase things just for the sake of it, maybe you have got into the habit of cooking rather than grabbing a takeaway. This question brings up so many clues about what is truly important to you in your life.

Using these simple questions you can create a template of what you would like your life to look like, there is nothing quite like a global pandemic to really help us to realise what and who is important to us. This striped backed way of life has been so difficult for so many but I also believe it is a one off chance to really learn about ourselves and make life what we want it to be. Be kind to yourself, answer these questions honestly and without judgement. You may not be able to implement everything on your template right away and this is OK, work towards building a life that energises you, makes you feel good and fulfills you.
